Review

Amanda and Julius Sternburg have two children living in Berlin, Germany at the brink of WWII.  Amanda owns a bookstore and Julius is a medical doctor.  Unexpectedly Julius does not come home and Amanda finds out that he is dead, but he left her very specific instructions to leave Germany.  She must put her two girls on a ship to Cuba where her brother is suppose to meet them and she is suppose to go stay with a friend in France.  When Amanda goes to ship off her children she decides at the last moment that she was keeping her youngest, Lina with her.

I'll stop there, because I don't want to give too much away.  I adored this book, I loved the family dynamic.  Amanda was such a strong mother to send her oldest daughter away and hope she makes it to Cuba so she can live a better life.  I couldn't even imagine leaving your daughter to complete strangers and going to a foreign place that you have never been.

I also loved the friendships in this book.  The friendship between Amanda and Claire and also Amanda daughter's and Claire's daughter.  They did everything they could to stay together during a really difficult time.  They did a lot for each other and sacrificed soo much.

If you love historical fiction with great family and friendship dynamics then this book is definitely for you!  I highly recommend this book!!

I received a complimentary copy from the publisher.

  2. I've been seeing this one pop up around the blogosphere, although historical books aren't usually my thing. However, I recently read Among the Red Stars and really enjoyed it! Have you heard of it? It's about the Night Witches in Russia, and all-female aviation group, and the characters are real people that were in the group (with the exception of the main character and her cousin). It was fascinating!

I'm so happy this one worked for you! <3
